Barclay cigarettes are manufactured by Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company, which is based in the United States of America. In 2004, the U.S. operational activities of Brown & Williamson were acquired by R. J. Reynolds and a new company – Reynolds American Inc. was established.

Barclay cigarettes are very much famous for the scandal around Brown & Williamson manipulating the results of the FTC tests. The brand was introduced in 1981 and the manufacturer claimed it was 99% free of tar. These figures were confirmed by the government machine tests. The company's competitors immediately petitioned the Federal Trade Commission, claiming that the test procedure was flawed and people actually smoke in a different way so that the machine test figures couldn't reveal real tar content.

The process was very difficult and lasted for over a decade. Brown & Williamson did not only defend, but attacked from to time as well. For example, in the Netherlands, Philip Morris Holland B.V. announced full-page newspaper ads republishing a slander of Barclay by a local anti-smoking group. Though ads were soon removed, Brown & Williamson took PM Holland B.V. to the court.

Now it seems that all nuances have been sorted and Barclay cigarettes start their way back to the top. Though not heavily marketed, Barclay cigarettes are known for the utilization of the latest technological advancements in the tobacco industry, so many people believe these cigarettes are indeed less harmful than those of the competitors. The scandal of the past slowly drains away - Barclay brand has all chanced to retrieve the lost positions.
