Gauloises cigarettes are produced by the Altadis company. Previously the brand was owned by the company named Seita. In 1999 a lawsuit against four French cigarette companies, including Seita, was filed by a French Health Insurance Fund. This led to Altadis acquiring the rights to manage Gauloises brand. Altadis is a joint French-Spanish company, which is now the manufacturer and international distributor of Gauloises cigarettes.

First Gauloises cigarettes contained dark tobacco blends from Turkey and Syria. These cigarettes were unfiltered, wide and short. Gauloises cigarettes were known for their strong and very distinctive taste.

Year 2005 saw Altadis moving Gauloises cigarettes production to Spain because of poor profits and decreasing demand in France. However, now this is considered as a huge mistake, as in 2006 Spain has announced a ban of smoking in public places, except of the special areas for smokers. In France the project of a similar ban was not adopted by the parliament.

Gauloises cigarettes are very popular between those smokers, who like strong taste and somewhat iconic brands. In France smoking Gauloises means being patriotic (those we know now that Gauloises are manufactured in Spain these days).

Gauloises cigarettes were the favorite brand of many famous people. Pablo Picassom, Jean Paul Sartre, George Orwell, Roman Polanski – all these people have mentioned Gauloises cigarettes in their works. The brand is also smoked by Jean Reno’s character in the "Ronin" movie.
