In 1952 P. Lorillard Company (Lorillard Tobacco Co. as it was previously named) was one of the smallest tobacco manufacturers in the USA, holding approximately a 6% market share. And this very year was marked with the introduction of Kent - the first cigarettes to have a new filter to drastically reduce tar and nicotine.

The filter was named Micronite. Kent cigarettes advertising said it was the greatest health protection in the cigarettes history. Crocidolite asbestos was used as a filtering element. Later the usage of asbestos was prohibited and in 1954 Kent had to implement new filtering technologies. Kent cigarettes were among the first filtered tobacco products on the US market. In 1950 only 1 or 2 percent of the cigarettes sold had filters and only two smallest tobacco manufacturers had filtered varieties in their products list. In 1954 after the society knew more about the cancer, filter brands accounted for over 10 percent of sales in the USA.

Kent cigarettes were heavily advertised at that period of time. One of the advertisements said: “sensitive smokers get real health protection with new Kent” and “Kent takes out more nicotine and tars than any other leading cigarette - the difference in protection is priceless”. TV commercials displayed Kent’s filter with the dark remains from tobacco smoke.

In 1992 the brand was purchased by the British industry giant – British American Tobacco. These days Kent cigarettes are one of the most popular cigarette brands in Europe and America. More than 20 billions Kent cigarettes are produced each year.
