A protest Thursday by a handful of students against Indiana University Southeast’s tobacco-free policy resulted in four students receiving referrals after they refused to put out their lit cigarettes at the request of school officials.
School spokeswoman Jenny Johnson Wolf said the students were referred to the vice chancellor for possible disciplinary action.
“We’re glad to see the students taking an active role, but we have to enforce policy,” she said.
The protest began near the New Albany campus’ clock tower about 12:30 p.m. and lasted about 15 minutes, said organizer Ian Girdley, an IUS student and smoker. He said a small group moved to a nearby field away from the crowd and lit their cigarettes.
The group declined to extinguish the cigarettes after a peaceful exchange with school officials.
Girdley said the protesters would like a “place where they can go and smoke” on campus away from people who don’t want to be subjected to second-hand smoke.
IUS became a smoke-free campus on Aug. 1, 2007. |
