PEOPLE living in Glasgow’s poorest districts spend more per person on cigarettes than residents of any other area of Scotland, research has revealed. Smokers in these areas spend an average of as much as £633 a year on cigarettes, compared with a Scotland-wide figure of £354.

At the other end of the scale, Evie, in the Orkney Islands, had the lowest spend, at £184 per person.

The consultant CACI ranked 833 Scottish council wards on the basis of people’s average annual spending on cigarettes.

The statistics, published yesterday, underlined Glasgow’s reputation as one of Europe’s unhealthiest cities.

In total, 18 out of the top 20 districts were in the city. Of the next ten districts, nine were in Glasgow, with the remaining one in Paisley, just across the city boundary in Renfewshire.

In all these 30 districts, smokers parted with £600 or more a year to pay for their cigarettes.

However, the amounts spent on alcohol in licensed premises in those areas was well down compared with more affluent areas of the country.

According to CACI, the New Town in Edinburgh, with its expensive restaurants and trendy bars, had the highest individual annual spend on alcohol.

While the breakdown of spending habits confirmed social habits that have been well tracked by health professionals for years, and which strongly influenced the Scottish Executive’s decision to push ahead with a ban on smoking in public places, it also showed that people living in the country’s more remote areas were heavy smokers.

The island of Islay was ranked 54th of the local authority wards, spending £493 per person on cigarettes, while Bayhead, on Lewis, was ranked 83rd at £452.

In the Borders, the villages of Innerleithen and Walkerburn, which have seen employment slump since the area’s textile industry went into decline, were ranked 97th, with £443 spent, while the Black Isle in the Highlands is ranked 100th, at £442 per person.

The top ten council areas for spending on cigarettes were: Anderston (£633), Barlanark (£588), Milnbank (£569), Calton (£563), Parkhead (£599), Hutchesontown (£557), Bridgeton (£555), Keppochhill (£554), the Merchant City (£552) and Glenwood (£543).

In Edinburgh, the district with the highest spend per person on cigarettes was Craigmillar, where people fork out an average of £529 every year.

The Avon ward in Falkirk was ranked in 33rd place, with smokers there spending £500 per person on cigarettes.

Inverness central was ranked in 40th place, with spending at £487.

Meanwhile, in the North-east, the Seaton ward was the district that was ranked first for Aberdeen as having the highest spend per person on cigarettes.

In Dundee, the ward of Lochee East was ranked first, with an annual spend of £469.

The city centre of Inverness, with its many bars and restaurants, scored highest in the Highlands for spend per person on smoking, at £487.

In Stirling, the picture was much the same, with the town centre recording the highest spend, at a rate of £423 per person.

The bottom ten was dominated by the affluent areas of Edinburgh and Aberdeen, where residents spend by far the smallest amount on cigarettes every year.

In the capital, South Morningside and Murrayfield were the bottom-ranked wards, spending £201 and £197 per person respectively.

Queens Cross and Cults in Aberdeen were the lowest ranked in that city, spending £197 and £192 respectively.
