Philip Morris, Manila's Fortune Tobacco in venture |

|
Philip Morris International Inc., the New York tobacco company, formed a joint venture with closely held Fortune Tobacco Corp. of Manila. In a Thursday statement, Philip Morris said the companies would transfer certain assets and liabilities to a new company that they will hold 50-50. Fortune Tobacco Chairman Lucio Tan will chair the board of the venture while Philip Morris will manage the operations day to day. Philip Morris called the venture a strong strategic fit, enabling it to expand its portfolio of brands in the Philippines, an "important cigarette market." The venture's contribution to Philip Morris's profit will be immaterial in 2010; it will add to profit in 2011 as cost savings from integration of production, purchasing and distribution kick in, the company said. Fortune Tobacco, which focuses on value-priced cigarettes, produces brands including Fortune and Champion, Philip Morris said. The venture will produce Marlboro and Philip Morris cigarettes under license, the company said.
